Many of us sometimes complain because we feel as if we don’t have enough space available. Even if you have a few acres, you may want more, so it is sometimes good to look at those who might be dealing with less.
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of a crowded place? Maybe think of one of the larger cities in the world, such as New York City or Paris.
They would certainly be crowded, but there is a small island located on Africa’s Lake Victoria that is thought to be the most crowded place on the face of the earth. The island, which is only about half an acre large, is completely packed with people.
Just how large is half an acre? A soccer field is a full acre, so it’s about half the size of a soccer field.
Migingo Island is home to about 500 people and probably more. It is on the border of Kenya and Uganda, and nobody is quite sure which country has rights to it.
There is a bilateral commission that will likely look into the matter to see if Kenya or Uganda is responsible for it but with that many people, they may not necessarily want to take responsibility for it.
Then again, there has been quite a battle going on over this little island, and it is being called one of Africa’s smallest wars.
So what is it like to live on the island? The island is packed full of metal shacks that are so close together they are almost on top of each other. Aside from those homes, there are four bars, a hair salon, a number of brothels, and probably not room to do much more.
There is also a sanitation facility on the island, but there is only one of those available.
Fishing tends to take up most of the time of the island’s inhabitants. Some of the deep waters that surround the island hold the Nile perch and other fish that are easily caught. In fact, fishing is why many people come to the island.
One island resident spoke to a news outlet in 2018 and said that many of his close friends were there before him would come back with a lot of goodies from their fishing trips, so that is why he went to the island.
If you live on the island instead of traveling to the island from one of the nearby countries, it will save you money on gas. Considering the fact that you can make a decent living catching Nile perch, it may be worth a move.
According to one fisherman, a good quantity of fish could bring up to $300 per kilogram on international markets.
So, are your bags packed yet?
