Perhaps one of the most heartbreaking events in a dog owner’s life is finding out that your much-loved animal companion is suffering from an illness. Benjamin May learned that his dog Duffy, a rescued Irish terrier, has diabetes.

“One day he started peeing in the house…which wasn’t like him. He is a very well-behaved dog. So we took him to the vet and they determined that his body wasn’t breaking down sugars etc., and he was diabetic.” Benjamin (BenZino21) wrote on the website Reddit.

“So he started getting shots twice a day but we weren’t able to keep his numbers in line due to the dosage the vet gave us and he got progressively worse.” He added.

Duffy struggled with uncontrollably high sugar levels, which resulted in losing his eyesight. “Within about 3-5 months he went from a normal eight-year-old dog to a dog who was completely blind,” writes Benjamin.

“It broke my heart seeing this dog I grew up with … running into things, not being able to recognize me.” Benjamin shared.

With faith and love for Duffy, his family, and veterinarians did not give up on him. They consistently monitored his blood sugar levels and administered medications until the numbers are steady for Duffy to be qualified for eye surgery that will regain his sight.

Eventually, Duffy conquered his surgery. “If we didn’t do it then, they said he would be blind for life. Thankfully the surgery was a success.” Benjamin said.

His family made sure to document this momentous day when he regained his eyesight. Duffy joyfully runs to his family and wags his tail, a little confused about whom to approach first— but making sure he showers each one of them with warmth and affection.

“He’s still diabetic so he still needs to receive an insulin injection twice a day but the surgery to repair his eyes was a total success and he hasn’t developed any problems or complications with his eyesight,” Benjamin told The Huffington Post.

For Benjamin, Duffy’s healing process is worth every penny. It’s like giving back the unconditional love Duffy brings them.

“I know most people will say that was a waste of money, but whatever. He’s happy and he makes us happy, he’s family to us. You can’t put a price on the family.”

It’s wonderful to see a dog’s special bond with humans. They are more than just protectors of the household; they are also part of your every journey— through pain and happiness.
