Styles, who took home two Grammy awards this year, is under fire for a clueless remark during his Album of the Year acceptance speech.
The 29-year-old singer won two Grammy awards last night – one for Best Pop Vocal Album for Harry’s House and the Album of the Year award for his third studio album.
“Well, shit…” he said as he took the mic.
How Much of a Down Payment Do You Actually Need for a House?
“I’ve been so inspired by every artist in this category with me. A lot of different times in my life… I listen to everyone in this category when I’m alone,” He said.
The Night Changes singer added, “I think on nights like tonight it’s important for us to remember there is no such thing as ‘best’ in music,” he said. “I don’t think any of us sit in the studio making decisions on what is going to get us one of these.”
And it was going well until he said, “This doesn’t happen to people like me very often. This is so so nice, thank you.”
After his speech, fans left confused about his last comment when he said, “this doesn’t happen to people like me anymore.”
According to Buzzfeed, “Being that Harry is a cisgender white man who grew up in England, many people took issue with the inference that “people like” him are historically less likely to win big awards at the Grammys. Particularly considering that the overwhelming majority of Album of the Year winners since 1959 have been white cis men, just like Harry.”
Many people on the internet didn’t appreciate his comment and said he should have thought well before speaking.
“This doesn’t happen to people like me often” who, white British men? One person wrote on Twitter. “Don’t get me wrong I like harry styles I just don’t know why he said that specifically. Lmfao.”
“Harry styles said ‘this doesn’t happen to people like me very often’ and I gotta be honest I can’t think of a type of people this happens for more,” another wrote.
“Absolutely Love Harry Styles and lots of his music. But…he was in the biggest boy band in the world, created on a reality television show, and he’s a white British millionaire,” a third said.
“this doesn’t often happen to people like me” YOU’RE A CIS STRAIGHT WHITE BRITISH MALE WHO USES QUEER AESTHETICS TO MAKE UP FOR YOUR SUBPAR MUSIC TO REMAIN RELEVANT AFTER DISBANDING WITH THE BAND WHICH YOU HAD SECOND RATE VOCALS IN. IT HAPPENS TO PEOPLE LIKE YOU ALL THE TIME! added another.
“This doesn’t happen to people like me very often” says the white man who uses queer aesthetics to sell records and won album of the year over a Black woman,” someone said.
“Harry Styles can’t act and can’t sing, yet was in two movies this year and won AOTY. Never give up on your dreams, white dudes,” another user commented.
