Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth might have only been married for a year, but they were together for nearly a decade before parting for good in 2019. They were first introduced in 2009 and went through a few ups and downs, including a brief breakup, before getting engaged in 2012.

The two weren’t in any major rush to get married, and they didn’t tie the knot until 2018. They announced their divorce a year later.

Getting engaged spurred conversations about married life for the couple, and it turns out that one pointed topic was about whether or not they should sign a prenuptial agreement. Liam was reportedly extremely against the idea.

Per the Daily Mail, a source recently told OK! Australia that Liam was in fact “deeply offended” that he was asked to sign the agreement at all, and that the two had fights that ended up with them both “screaming and in tears.”

Another source previously backed this up, telling Life & Style, “They’ve had heated arguments over this. He’s a firm believer that prenups spoil the romance of a marriage and that if they are truly in love, it’s not needed. He’s assured Miley he isn’t interested in her fortune and has enough money of his own.”

However, it seems that Miley eventually came out the victor of that particular argument, as StyleCaster notes the two had an “iron-clad” agreement in place before they wed in December 2018.

They separated not even a year later. Miley’s representative confirmed the news in a statement, saying, “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”

Ultimately, Liam filed for divorce in August 2019, and the pair finalized their split in February 2020. An additional source explained that the divorce went smoothly and added that “the couple had a prenup so dividing property wasn’t an issue; Miley will keep the animals in the divorce.”
